Making a graphic
How to make a church graphic — writing a brief in plain words, pulling in an event, announcement, or campaign, choosing between a finished graphic and artwork only, the three shapes, what Auto does, how long it takes, and what it costs in AI credits.
Graphics designs a picture for whatever your church is doing — a potluck, a baptism, a service time change — with the date and place drawn right into the artwork. You describe it in a sentence; Psalmly draws it. It's part of the Community and Growth plans, and it's admin-only.
Open it from Graphics in the admin sidebar and click Make a graphic. (There's also a Make a graphic button on every announcement and campaign, and on every event that hasn't been cancelled — see Adding a graphic to an event, announcement, or campaign.)
Say what it's for
The first box asks What's it for? Write it the way you'd say it out loud:
Our monthly potluck supper, first Sunday after the service
Plain words are fine — you don't need to describe a picture, name a color, or know anything about design. A sentence or two is plenty.
Pull in something from your church
Under From my church you can attach an event, an announcement, or a campaign you already have. This is the part worth learning: attaching one writes the brief for you and tells Psalmly the exact words to letter, so the date, the time, and the place come out right instead of being retyped.
Each button opens a searchable list of everything — events under Upcoming or Earlier (churches make graphics about things that already happened), announcements you've sent to the whole church, and drives that are Running or Finished. Pick a few — up to four get lettered onto the graphic. Each one appears as a chip saying what it contributed, with an ✕ to take it back off.
Attach up to four and they go on one graphic together — the "this week at church" slide, or the next few events for the foyer. That's the thing a blank prompt box can't do for you: you'd have to type all of it, correctly, every week.
Everything here is optional, and you can edit the brief freely after attaching.
Choose what you're getting
- What should we make? — A finished graphic (the date and place drawn on it) or Just the artwork (no words at all, for when you'd rather add your own in slides or a bulletin). Both are real answers, and both cost the same.
- Where will you use it? — Square post for the Instagram and Facebook feed, Portrait for posters, print inserts, and phone screens, or Landscape for screen slides and page headers. Pick this before you press: each shape is drawn as its own composition, so getting the same graphic in a second shape means making a second one, not re-cropping the first.
- How should it look? — leave it on Auto and Psalmly picks a direction that fits, or Browse looks for forty of them. There's a guide to this: Choosing a look.
What it costs and how long it takes
The panel on the right says what you'll get and what it costs — 25 AI credits — before you press anything, and the button says it again. Your church's monthly credit allowance covers it; see Your church's AI assistant for how credits work.
Press Generate and it usually takes about twenty seconds, though it can occasionally run to a couple of minutes. Stay on the page while it draws.
If a graphic doesn't come back, that happens sometimes and your credits are returned — press Generate again. The one exception is when Psalmly says it couldn't design that one: the request was turned down rather than dropped, so pressing again won't help. Reword it instead — real people, brand logos and anything graphic tend to be refused. Your credits aren't spent either way.
What comes back
- The graphic, ready to look at and download.
- Use on <name> — if you came in from an event, announcement or drive, this puts the graphic straight onto it as its image. If that item already has one, Psalmly asks first. You'll only see this when a single item is attached.
- Want a change? — ask in plain words: "make the date bigger," "warmer," "try it without the sunburst." Press Redraw and it's drawn again in the same look. Your first five changes are included; after that each one costs the same as a new graphic. Every version is kept, so you can flip back to an earlier one — "the third one was better" is a real answer.
- Download the graphic — free, as many times as you like. It saves as a PNG, the format Instagram and a print counter both accept.
If Psalmly knows the exact words that should be on the graphic — because you attached an event, announcement, or campaign — it reads the finished lettering back and tells you if something looks misspelled: "Worth a second look." The graphic is still fine to use; ask for a change and it'll be redrawn.
Where it goes afterward
Everything you make lands in your Graphics library, so you can come back for it weeks later — to download again for a bulletin or a noticeboard, or to put it straight onto another event or announcement without paying for it twice. See Your graphics library.
Nothing you make is public. A graphic sits in your library, visible only to your church's admins, until you deliberately download it or use it on something.
Plans and credits
- Graphics is part of the Community and Growth plans. On the free plan you'll see what it does and an upgrade prompt instead. See Managing your plan and billing.
- It draws on your church's monthly AI credits — the same shared allowance as the assistant, Scribe, and the AI drafting buttons. Downloads and your included changes cost nothing.
- If your plan lapses, everything you've already made stays yours — still downloadable, and still usable on new events, announcements, and drives. Only making new ones stops.
